Cleaning a timber floor is a relatively straightforward process that, when done correctly, can help maintain its appearance and longevity.
Here are the basic steps you can follow to clean a timber floor:
- Sweep or vacuum: Start by removing any loose dirt, dust, or debris from the floor surface using a soft-bristled broom or a vacuum cleaner with a hardwood floor attachment or soft head. This step is important to prevent scratching the floor during the cleaning process.
- Damp mop: Use a well-wrung damp mop or microfiber mop to clean the floor. Avoid using excessive water, as standing water can damage the wood. You can use a mild wood floor cleaner diluted in water for regular cleaning. We recommend our own timber floor cleaner which is made right here in Australia and is a very economical and reliable method for cleaning the timber floor as shown above. [Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for any specific cleaning products. We do not recommend any type of cleaning solution that contains soap or that generates foam when mixed with water for the simple reason that soap often dries on the surface of the floor in a slightly tacky state which contributes to the floor getting dirtier quickly.]
- Spot cleaning: For tougher stains or sticky spots, you can use a slightly damp cloth or sponge with a small amount of the cleaning solution. Gently rub the affected area until the stain is removed. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaning tools that can damage the floor’s finish.
- Use Mats: Have mats at the entrance of the house to limit the dirt and grime that is trod into the house.
- Regular maintenance: To keep your timber floor looking its best, it’s important to maintain a regular cleaning schedule. Sweep or vacuum the floor regularly to prevent dirt and debris from accumulating. Avoid using steam cleaners, as the heat and moisture can damage the wood.
- Protective measures: Consider using rugs or mats in high-traffic areas to protect the floor from scratches and wear. Felt pads can be attached to the bottom of furniture legs to prevent them from scratching the floor. We always recommend using felts on the chairs at dining tables where there is a considerable scuffing action as the chairs are pulled out and taken in under load.
By following these basic steps and adopting good maintenance practices, you can keep your timber floor looking beautiful for years to come.
