Would you like to have a go, hands on with some of the machinery that is used to maintain timber floors? This is one of the extended services that we are offering here at VCS. It’s a huge confidence booster when you are not sure whether you can use professional equipment.

We are offering workshops in different forms to help people to become confident to use equipment to maintain their timber floor. VCS has been a hive of activity to get everything ready.

Why Have A Try?

Why is it good to try out a machine before you take it home? Simply put, many people try out higher machines on their own floor and put in small gouges into the surface of the timber because of their unfamiliarity with the design. Using a sanding machine is not something you just ‘pick up’ as you go. A little bit of tuition can make all the difference and can bring you to a level of confidence and competence on our training area as opposed to your home or project.

As with any type of jobs that you do, there are always tips and tricks that help you to do the job more easily. Questions like, what direction to sand in? What are the appropriate sanding grits for the timber that is being sanded? What machinery do I really need? What problems can I encounter on my specific project?

With VCS you are dealing with a combined experience level in excess of 80 years. That is, the people at VCS, have actual experience doing the job at a practical level. The opportunity to try out the machines and pick up some knowledge is a really good thing.

Purpose Designed To Make It Easier

The process here at VCS has been purpose designed to make it easy for you to learn at a level that suits you. From a 15-minute workshop with the machines to more lengthy workshops with videos and examples, everything is tailored to suit you. We like to keep things small and are happy to do one-on-one workshops or in small groups. Work is currently underway to make it possible for you to attend a workshop during the week or on selected Saturdays. By November 2024 we anticipate that we will have weekend workshops well and truly in place for selected Saturdays.

We are very serious about helping people achieve a level of confidence and competence using the machinery and introducing the coating systems that can be used to maintain the timber long into the future. As you can imagine, it takes a lot to condense down years of experience into the short workshops, however we also enjoy answering people’s individual questions related to their individual project so please feel free to bring questions.

Sanding Machines & Scrubbing Machines

The range of machinery that we are making available is growing throughout the year. Our machines include belt sanders as well as edge sanders and rotary sanders and in addition have the flexi sand machines.

So we’ve got the sanding area of any project covered very nicely with the range of tools available. In addition, however we’ve added two different types of scrubbing machine for light duty through to heavy duty scrubbing. On top of this we also have the small Osmo polishers that can be used to evenly apply stain or evenly apply an additional coat of maintenance oil as needed.

Our larger scrubbing machines can be used to clean up decks with the appropriate brushes fitted so that a deck can be cleaned up ready for recoating without the need to use a sanding machine. We can also explain why certain types of decking coatings fail so badly in the Australian UV light and introduce you to coatings that will last much longer. So, our range of machinery is very well suited to the individual needs, and we have selected machines that are very accurate as sanding machines while at the same time relatively easy-to-use with a little training.

What Will I Get Out of It?

Confidence and competence are two things that you will get out of this workshop. The machinery used in sanding floors is powerful and you can do a lot of damage to the surface of your timber floor without some idea of the way that floors are sanded.

With due respect to the online videos that are available, no really serious video that we have seen explains exactly how to sand properly nor can a video replace the feeling of being shown how to use a machine and actually having a go. The first time we began to help people to have a go at doing floors themselves was over 20 years ago and we have had lots of happy clients as a result.

Examples

One example that really demonstrates the value of the hire machines and the short workshops was a gentleman who hired machines elsewhere for the first part of the job and found it very difficult to control the machinery. In addition, his partner was very unimpressed with the level of dust that was distributed to other parts of the house. When he came to see us, he was specifically interested in understanding how to get rid of all the damage that had been done in the first stages of the work. We were able to demonstrate how to use a rotary sander correctly and in turn how to tidy up the work done so far. Obviously, it’s not easy to get rid of damage caused as a result of tilt action machines that are commonly hired out. But he was able to achieve a very good result, and he was amazed to discover that he could use a rotary sander without filling his house with dust.

That’s one of the big differences between professional machines and the sort of smaller machinists that are often hired out for floor sanding. Professional machines are often more powerful but also designed to be properly controlled and a lot of the noise made by these machines relates to the dust extraction system purposely designed to reduce potential dust release.
