When looking at sanding machines it’s easy to imagine that they are all pretty much the same. In reality they are very different. In fact, if you talk to professional floor sanders you will find that many of them have many different views about different machines.

However all of them use machines that are designed for professional use and that makes a very big difference. Professional machines have a number of advantages over lightweight sanding machines especially when it comes to preparing a timber floor for a coating. When the coating is applied to the surface of the timber, you will then see all of the mistakes that have been made in the sanding. This is the effect of light reflecting off and also refracting through the timber floor coating. The last thing you want to do is get to this point and then apply the coating and see lots of sanding marks in the timber as well as a very uneven surface.

When you see professional floor sanders at work, you will notice that they do not rush the process. You cannot rush the sanding of a timber floor if you want to get the floor looking even and well finished. It’s really important to take your time and control the machine. Professional floor sanders spend a lot of time working with timber and understand that different timbers sand in different ways. They equip themselves with very good machinery and get to know them well.

When you hire a machine, you do not have the experience that someone who does it every week will have unless you’ve been in the industry, and therefore you want to give yourself the best chance of getting a good result by selecting the same type of machines that the professionals choose to use.

Professional sanding machines are simply larger and are balanced in order to sand better and sit better on the floor. You get a more even sand with each pass of the machine. If you use a machine that is very light, it has great difficulty in controlling the sanding effect. You can find yourself riding over the imperfections. You may magnify any unevenness in the floor as apposed to sanding it level and even.

In timber floor sanding work, we talk about four different types of sanding. These are coarse, medium, fine and level sanding.

Level sanding is the first stage of sanding a timber floor when the floor is sanded at a slight angle across the run of the boards to try to level the boards to the adjacent run of timber. After this, it’s a matter of working through the grades from coarse to medium to fine.

Because there are so many passes by the sanding machine this is an important reason for getting the right type of machinery. If the machine is very light, it will tend to exaggerating imperfections as it rides over areas that need attention whereas a heavier machine will tend to eliminate a lot of the rise and fall in the floor. Not that you ever get a floor completely level, but you can get it looking somewhat closer to level.
