We did an article on the number of decks that are peeling with flaking around Perth and got a number of phone calls. Several referred to water-based finishes in particular that had been used externally and are now peeling badly. We didn’t appreciate just how widespread this issue is.

As a result several have been sanded off and fixed using one of the OSMO decking oil range products. OSMO oils are designed to penetrate and protect the deck and stay in place – rather than peeling off. Penetrating oils are designed to do just that – penetrate the timber. Because they work from within with just a little material left on top there is nothing to peel. [Of course if you apply too much and it sits on top of the timber then it peels off – but this is miss-application rather than a fault with the oil.] OSMO is always applied as a penetrating oil.

We have helped a number of people with this problem. We think that it has something to do with the very high UV index in Western Australia. Everyone knows that there is a bit of bite in the sun locally. Decks exposed to strong sunlight will be in need of treating carefully.

Some have abandoned timber in place of plastic decking only to see marked fading… Not every deck is created equal. We have seen some good ones but many have issues with fading so always check if looking at a composite deck. One sander was asked if he could repair a 2 year old deck and had to tell the owners of the plastic deck that it was now ready to be binned…

Use timber on your deck by all means. It is cooler and better looking than plastic… however seal it with OSMO so that you get the life out of it..

Resurfacing decks that have experienced flaking and peeling of their coatings can be a daunting task, often requiring significant time, effort, and resources. When a deck coating fails, it compromises the surface’s aesthetics and structural integrity, leading to further deterioration if not addressed promptly. The process of resurfacing involves not only removing the old, compromised material but also preparing the underlying structure for a new coating. This preparation often requires intensive labor, including sanding, scraping, and sometimes even repairing the deck itself. Without this meticulous groundwork, the new coating can fail prematurely, resulting in a cycle of ongoing maintenance and repair.

Moreover, using coatings that are known to flake and peel can be detrimental to both the exterior environment and the lifespan of the deck. Such coatings tend to trap moisture underneath, which can exacerbate deterioration, leading to more extensive damages that can be costly to rectify. It is crucial to select high-quality coatings specifically designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and resist peeling. These superior products not only enhance the immediate appearance of your deck but also provide long-term protection against the elements.

In conclusion, the effort involved in resurfacing a deck with flaking coatings cannot be overstated. Choosing the right coatings is vital—not just for the aesthetic appeal but for ensuring the durability and longevity of your deck. Opt for reliable, high-performance coatings that won’t flake or peel, thereby safeguarding your investment and minimizing future upkeep. Remember, prevention is always more cost-effective than repair. Don’t leave your deck’s fate to chance; prioritize quality in your resurfacing solutions.
