Notes on Osmo LED SMART OIL

– OSMO LED Smart Oil is a professional hard wax oil that cures instantly under a 395 nm LED UV light.
– Produces a very durable, water- and dirt-resistant surface for interior wood.
– Enables very fast turnaround due to near-instant curing.
– Designed to enhance wood appearance while providing superior protection.
– Recommended for manufacturing/workflows where speed and durability are critical.
Surface Preparation Requirements
– Wood must be clean, dry, and sanded before application.
– Maximum moisture content: 10% (noted as within Australian standards); kiln-dried timber preferred (noted as ideal for West Australian timbers).
– Remove dust and dirt thoroughly.
– Sanding guidance for furniture: sand up to 150–180 grit prior to finishing (example used 180 grit).
Application (Coat 1)
– Product is ready to use; do not thin.
– Stir well before use for uniform consistency.
– Apply a very small amount: ~20 g/m².
– Application tools: roller (thin application) or non-abrasive white pad (e.g., Osmo White Super Pad).
– Buff oil into the wood until no circular swirl marks remain.
– Buff off any excess product using white non-abrasive pads.
Curing Process (LED UV Lamp)
– Cure using a 395 nm LED UV light.
– Technique:
– Pass lamp slowly and progressively over treated area.
– Rate: ~5 seconds per ~300 mm.
– Hold lamp 10–15 cm above the surface.
– Do not allow the lamp to contact the surface.
Optional Second Coat Workflow (Example Used at VCS)
– Ensure first coat is fully cured with the lamp before proceeding.
– Lightly sand between coats:
– 320 grit sandpaper, or
– Red buffing pad containing 380 grit silicon carbide (noted as working well in the example).
– Remove all dust/excess thoroughly (white pad and light buffing).
– Apply second coat very thin: ~5–6 g/m².
– Apply with a white pad or roller, buff until smooth, then cure again under the LED UV lamp to enhance durability.
Comparison to Standard OSMO Oils
– Noted as having different ingredients than standard OSMO oils.
– Produces hardness comparable to lacquer, achieved almost instantaneously with the smart lamp curing process.
Demonstration Notes / Result
– Example finish described as a “beautiful hard finish.”
– Demonstration piece was placed in the VCS showroom (VCS Solid Timber Floors, Osborne Park).
