Available Machines
Belt Sanders
The belt sander is the principal sanding machine used in level sanding and coarse and medium sanding work on a timber floor. There are several stages in sanding and none of the other machines available have the ability to level boards, one board adjacent to the other. You can never level sand an entire floor but you can bring the levels of adjacent boards to a similar height and the belt sander plays this role as well as cleaning up and preparing the main areas of the timber floor.
So whereas some machines are referred to as machines for finishing sanding or fine sanding, the belt sander is the principal tool and a well balanced easy to use belt sander is a real bonus when it comes to floor preparation.
Edge Sanders
The edge sander as the name implies is used for the edges of areas that are being sanded. It works around the perimeter of the room as well as getting into areas where the larger belt sander cannot reach. This is the reason that you always belt sand first before doing the edge sanding because you don’t know where the belt sander will be able to fully reach.
You don’t want to be disappointed using the edge sander first and then when you use the belt sander realize that you have a gap between the work. The edge sander is designed as a high-speed rotary sander which cuts in a very small area of its disc. Discs are either 178 millimeters in diameter or 150 millimeters in diameter and should be used in a well-lit situation with a good view of what you are sanding.
In usual sanding work the edge sander will be used twice. To finish off the coarse sand and wants to address the stage before fine sanding. It’s always good to use a well-balanced edger that is not overly aggressive and yet able to achieve a good result.
Rotary Sanders
A rotary sander is based around a disc which is 405 millimeters in diameter. It is a finishing sander designed to apply a gentle sanding grit to the face of pre-sanded work – so when you finish with the belt sander and the edge sander you need to even up the sanding work so the grain and face of the timber is laying in the same direction to try to avoid sanding lines showing up when the coating is applied. The rotary sander evens out the floor and it’s important to sand using a range of grits up to the level that is required by the coating that you are going to apply to the surface of the floor.
Rotary sanders can also be used where a floor needs to be re-coated after some time and the surface needs to be gently scuffed in order to key the surface to take a new coating. At VCS we supply several different rotary sanders for use on timber floors.
